Leadership – Santa style!

Anne Johnson
Executive Director
Redwood Area Chamber & Tourism

If I was to poll all of you reading this right now, I’m willing to bet at least half of you have started or are decorated for Christmas. I don’t know if it’s because Thanksgiving is late this year, or possibly it was election stress and the need to get our mind on something else, but many of us decorated early this year. In our work lives, we’re probably getting ready to roll out our shop local campaigns, and maybe even prepare for a holiday light parade. It’s that time of year.

As Chambers of Commerce  executives, we understand the importance of good leadership. We take the role seriously and lead by example, in our business communities, our economic development arenas, in community development initiatives, and even on the hard issues that require professionalism and patience. As Chamber Execs, we work tirelessly to meet the needs of our members and our greater community.

In a book by Eric Harvey called “The Leadership Secrets of Santa Claus,” Mr Harvey points out the successful traits of the big guy in red. Many of these real world lessons, gifts from Santa, are good tools in the toolbox of the chamber professional as well. Let’s take a look.

Santa encourages leaders to “love what you do.” This can be challenging because the job of a chamber director executive is not an easy one, but the majority of us aren’t in this gig for the high pay, stock options, and great retirement benefits. Like Santa Claus, when you do something you’re passionate about, it gives you the energy to “carry the sack, lead the pack, and keep coming back.”

Mr. Harvey says leaders and Santa Claus “make the mission the main thing.” Chamber leaders do this well. In spite of the sometimes intense pressure from either other organizations or within our own, we stay true to our mission and in support of business with unwavering and uncompromising focus on our mission.

Santa also “listens to his elves.” As Chamber leaders, it’s essential to listen and learn from our business and community members.

Consistency and reliability are things that both Santa and chamber leaders understand. Every year without fail, Santa delivers. His reliability is legendary. With leadership, consistency in your actions and decisions builds trust and reliability within the the business community, the community at large, and within your team and board. We are the people they can depend on.

So take it from Santa, share the milk and cookies, make a list and check it twice, and choose your reindeer wisely. Happy holidays and keep up the good work!
